Job Summary/Basic Function

The Office of the University Provost invites applicants for the position of Vice Provost for Planning and Effectiveness (462120) with a start date of July 1, 2026.

Reporting directly to the University Provost, the Vice Provost provides strategic leadership for institutional accreditation, planning, assessment, and effectiveness initiatives. This role also includes supervising the Associate Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research and the Assistant Vice Provost for Institutional Accreditation. The successful candidate will also oversee Academic Affairs risk management.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee all compliance and reporting activities required by institutional and specialized accreditors, as well as the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC).
  • Guide the institution’s strategic and other long-term planning processes and implementation, ensuring alignment with university goals and mission.
  • Oversee institutional effectiveness activities, including policy development and implementation.
  • Provide leadership for institutional accreditation, strategic planning, assessment, and compliance functions.
  • Support Academic Affairs executive recruitment processes.
  • Carry out duties and responsibilities as delegated by the University Provost.

Required Knowledge:

  • Higher education organizational structures and processes.
  • Current best practices and emerging trends in higher education, including strategic planning, assessment, and community engagement.
  • Institutional accreditor and Carnegie Classification standards.
  • Principles and standards of community engagement.

The candidate must have:

  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems and issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies.

Required Education

A terminal degree from an accredited institution is required.

Required Related Experience

Three (3) years of experience in higher education administration at the level of department chair or higher or a higher education agency, with responsibility for institutional or programmatic accreditation, assessment, and strategic planning is required by the appointment date.

Other Desirables

Applicants with five (5) years of experience in higher education administration at the level of department chair or higher or in a higher education agency with responsibility for institution or programmatic accreditation, assessment, and strategic planning will receive special consideration.
