Job Summary/Basic Function
Advisors in the College of Liberal Arts will work with students and faculty in the following disciplines: Art, English, Foreign Languages, Global Studies, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology & Anthropology, and Speech & Theatre. The College of Liberal Arts has an established advising office with high professional standards and a reputation for excellence. Our advisors are student centered, clear communicators, team players, advocates for the Liberal Arts, and capable of working effectively with staff and faculty to serve the needs of our students. The college Advisors will work with the following groups of students: Traditional Students, Prescribed Students, Undeclared Students, Transfer Students and Traditional Students Meta Major as defined herein. Traditional advisors will work with students from the point of matriculation to graduation. The primary role of a traditional advisor is to provide educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses and determining appropriate education solutions for different types of students. The traditional advisor will monitor student progression and intervene as necessary to ensure students stay on track for graduation. The traditional advisor is responsible for the retention of the students assigned to them and will have regular contact with the students to ensure they are aware of available interventions that could help the student succeed. This position will be responsible for maintaining accurate student records using internal student tracking software to support the retention strategies and evaluate student progress and satisfaction. The advisor will perform other related tasks and special projects as assigned. Note: a flexible work schedule is required to accommodate student requests for advising after traditional work hours.
Required Education
- Advisor: Master's degree (a Liberal Arts discipline is preferred). Note: A Bachelor's degree (Liberal Arts discipline preferred) plus three (3) years of directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a Master's degree.
- Advanced Advisor: Master’s degree (earned by start date) in a related field is required.
Required Related Experience
- Advisor: No experience required with a Master's degree.
- Advanced Advisor: Minimum of two years of experience in the role of academic advisor or student support.
Desirable Related Experience
Two (2) years' progressively responsible experience working with college students or young adults in an advising or career services counseling area in a college or university setting preferred.
