Job Summary/Basic Function

The School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a full-time, temporary (non-tenurable) faculty position (#131290) in music theory at the rank of lecturer. This is a one-year temporary appointment. The contract may be renewed annually, subject to available funding, demonstrated need, and satisfactory performance as assessed through annual evaluations. The appointment start date is August 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will contribute to the academic growth, curricular development, and strategic planning of the music theory program at MTSU. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate students in music theory/aural skills within the musicianship core and other academic areas based on the candidate's areas of specialization. The position requires excellent musicianship, comprehensive knowledge of music theory pedagogy, a commitment to engaging with developments in the field, familiarity with current scholarship and teaching practices, including the incorporation of cross-disciplinary initiatives, and a commitment to serving students across various musical backgrounds and genres.

The MTSU School of Music serves approximately 250 undergraduate and graduate music majors pursuing Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, and Master of Music degrees, as well as many students pursuing specialized minors. For more information, visit www.mtsu.edu/music.

Required Education

A terminal degree in music theory or composition is required by the appointment date.

Required Related Experience

Two (2) years of full-time teaching at the collegiate level are required by the appointment date.
