Job Summary/Basic Function

The Department of Criminal Justice Administration at Middle Tennessee State University invites dynamic scholars and teachers with expertise in policing, criminal investigations, homeland security, or emergency management to apply for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#121040) at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is August 1, 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on-site and online in area-specific and broader-departmental topics (e.g., intro to criminal justice) as needed.
  • Develop and maintain an active research agenda with strong potential for external funding.
  • Publish scholarly work in peer-reviewed, high-impact journals.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities.
  • Engage in community partnerships that support the mission of the department and university.
  • Mentor students in various thesis and capstone projects.
  • Regularly meet with the department chair and administration.
  • Be regularly available to students during office hours.

Required Education

A PhD in criminal justice, criminology, emergency management, homeland security, fire science, or a closely related field is required by the appointment date.

A terminal degree and a master’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, emergency management, homeland security, fire science, or a closely related field, and four (4) years of full-time professional employment in the criminal justice system or emergency management by the appointment date will be considered in lieu of a PhD in criminal justice, criminology, homeland security, fire science, or a closely related field.

Other Desirables

Applicants with the following will receive special consideration:

  • a research agenda with strong potential for external funding will receive special consideration.
  • prior employment in law, law enforcement, corrections, homeland security, or emergency management.
  • experience using Canvas.
  • demonstrated history of developing and teaching courses in multiple delivery formats (in-person, hybrid, and online).
