Job Summary/Basic Function
The Horse Science Program in the Middle Tennessee State University School of Agriculture invites applicants for a 12-month clinical-track faculty position (non-tenurable) in equine reproduction and wellness. The start date for the position is negotiable. The MTSU Horse Science program is home to approximately 50 lesson horses, a 55-stall barn, an equine clinic and reproduction laboratory, indoor and outdoor teaching arenas, a jump course, and a free-stall exerciser. The MTSU Horse Science Program offers a bachelor of science and master of science degrees in horse science. The Horse Science Center shares 154 acres with the Tennessee Miller Coliseum, a $21 million, 220,000-square-foot venue for local, state, regional, national, and international equine events.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate students in classroom and laboratory settings related to equine reproductive physiology, horse breeding management, equine health, wellness, or welfare and may include additional courses related to their area of expertise. The successful candidate will provide routine veterinary care to the university's horses, oversee a small-scale Tennessee Walking Horse breeding program, and maintain herd health records. The faculty member will develop a strong teaching program combined with research and service within their area of equine expertise. Strong interpersonal skills are expected, resulting in a valued team member providing leadership and mentoring skills to students interested in horse science and veterinary health professions. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, computer skills, and the ability to communicate with college students, horse industry personnel, faculty, staff, and youth.
Required Education
A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine or an equivalent terminal veterinary degree is required by the appointment date.
Required Related Experience
Two years of post-veterinary-degree experience providing horse veterinary health care or as an equine veterinary intern is required.
Required License/Registration/Certification
A license to practice veterinary medicine in Tennessee is required by the appointment date.
Other Desirables
Applicants with experience teaching in classroom or clinical situations related to horses, equine reproduction, or equine health will receive special consideration. Also, those with board certification in equine practice, theriogenology, or internal medicine and those with strong professional connections in the horse industry will receive special consideration.
