Job Summary/Basic Function

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accredited Department of Art and Design at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#415080) in Graphic Design at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is August 1, 2024.

The successful candidate should have the ability and experience to teach a wide variety of courses in the Graphic Design curriculum from entry-level to advanced. The successful candidate should exhibit a mastery of graphic design skills; have comprehensive knowledge of design principles; demonstrate a solid understanding of typography in their work; possess knowledge of UI/UX design trends and theories; exhibit expertise in new, design industry-standard software and technology, including Macintosh hardware and Adobe software. Responsibilities may include curriculum development, student advising, grant writing, committee work, high school outreach, and computer lab administration. In addition, if the opportunity arises, enthusiasm for mentoring the active MTSU/AIGA student group is desired. 

Required Education

A terminal degree in graphic design, visual communications, or a closely related field is required.

Other Desirables

Applicants with two (2) years of full-time teaching experience in graphic design and those with five (5) years of professional or industry experience will receive special consideration. In addition, applicants exhibiting experience in UX/UI prototyping software or motion design and time-based editing software will receive special consideration.

To successfully apply, applicants must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, and statement of research or creative activities (as appropriate to the discipline) as separate attachments at the time of online application.

Applicants are also required to provide a link(s) to an online portfolio(s) or submit a PDF portfolio(s). Portfolio(s) should include at least 20 examples of personal, industry, or research work and 20 examples of student work completed in classes where the applicant was the instructor of record. Please label students' work with the course title or a brief description if possible. Applicants can upload PDF portfolios or provide links to a portfolio(s) in their curriculum vitae or a document attached as "Other Document 1." The link(s) must be active and working at the time of application submission and remain so until the search is complete.
