Job Summary/Basic Function
The College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) at Middle Tennessee State University invites applications for an Academic Advisor position in the Department of Chemistry and Pre-Professional Health Sciences. The Academic Advisor will collaborate with students to co-create educational plans in ways that are consistent with their aspirations, interests, strengths, and values--preparing them for a life of learning in a diverse and global society. MTSU Academic Advising fosters a collaborative, holistic, and inclusive student-centered relationship that promotes academic and personal growth so students can thrive in the University community. Through innovative, transformative, and informed practice, Academic Advisors empower students to think critically and take ownership of their journey and success. Academic Advisors work with traditional, transfer, undeclared, and pre-professional health students, ensuring they stay on track for graduation through constant engagement and monitoring. The Academic Advisor role is geared toward supporting student success, providing both academic and career advising while maintaining high standards of professionalism and collaboration within their respective college. CBAS has an established Advising Center with high professional standards and a reputation for excellence. The best qualified candidate is student-centered, communicates clearly and effectively, is a team player, advocates for STEM, and is capable of working effectively with staff and faculty to serve the diverse needs of students.
Required Education
Advisor: Master's degree (earned by start date). A Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years of directly relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of Master’s degree.
Advanced Advisor: Master's degree (earned by start date).
Required Related Experience
Advisor: No experience required with a Master's degree.
Advanced Advisor: Minimum of two years experience in the role of Academic Advisor or other Student Support. Demonstrated advisor competencies with increased responsibility for collaboration with faculty and staff, and involvement in professional development and special projects that contribute to the overall success of the advising center.
Desirable Related Experience
Preferred candidate will have a Master’s degree in higher education/student affairs, familiarity working with students in various Pre Professional Health Pathways, and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience working with students in a college or university setting.
