Job Summary/Basic Function

Reporting directly to the Senior Director for News and Media Relations, the successful candidate will be a multi-skilled, multi-media communicator who can report, produce and tell stories that matter most for our University community, creating compelling video, audio and written content for MTSU's platforms that could also be shared with outside media. This communicator will bring innovative storytelling and content to our broadcast and digital platforms, writing and editing stories and other content (in video, audio, photography and written journalistic formats) under deadline and present them in a captivating and authentic manner.

This communicator will be primarily tasked with developing and reporting video content for our platforms that is suitable for broadcast and sharing with outside media outlets. To do this, the successful candidate will also conduct interviews; research stories; write and edit news stories for all platforms; meet publication or broadcast deadlines; report on newsworthy events about the University as assigned; develop sources within the campus community for unique video and written stories; and collaborate with colleagues to develop innovative video and audio storytelling projects for digital platforms and broadcast.

This communicator will produce at least two substantial and polished video packages per week (two minutes or more), which will appear on True Blue TV; MTSU’s social media platforms; distributed to outside media; and featured as video and written stories on MTSUNews.com. The successful candidate will also find, pitch and produce at least one in-depth video package per month (at least seven minutes in length) to appear as a segment on MTSU’s Out of the Blue, the University’s monthly television and social media public affairs program, as approved by the program’s host and executive producer. Also, the communicator will be responsible for producing at least one “Middle in a Minute” 60-second audio story each week, to be featured, used and distributed on broadcast radio and podcast outlets in and out of MTSU (either doing the segments or producing work of others). And this communicator will routinely shape content into relevant and compelling social posts on MTSU social media platforms.

This journalist will also serve as a mentor and coach for video story production for colleagues in the Office of News and Media Relations, assisting the Senior Director in training others to produce more visual content of high quality that could accompany their MTSUNews.com stories, social media post and news releases. This communicator should also have demonstrated ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven live shots when required, including serving as event host or anchor as required. This communicator will also anchor and produce regular programming on True Blue TV as required; be tasked to cover and report from major events, such as commencements, homecomings and major announcements deemed as priorities by the University; and perform other duties as required.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or similar relevant degree

Required Related Experience

At least two years of experience through a combination of relevant student work, internships or professional positions that demonstrate ability in the requirements set forward in this job posting

Desirable Related Experience

More than two years experience as a multimedia journalist for a television station or multi-media content platform.
