Job Summary/Basic Function

The Emergency Communications Specialist (ECS) is the first link in the emergency response chain. The ECS answers and prioritizes incoming emergency and non-emergency phone calls from the campus community and general public requesting assistance or information. As a result, the ECS is required to listen and process information quickly, assign available police resources, and provide assistance to callers and gather facts and information for responding officers. ECS personnel must quickly determine the necessary resources and provide information to responding emergency personnel (police/fire/EMS) to ensure an appropriate and timely response. The ECS must be capable of performing job functions during periods of stress and have the ability to function independently or in conjunction with other Communications personnel. Calls for assistance must be answered calmly and the ECS must handle emergency situations dispassionately and logically to communicate effectively with the public and first responders. The ECS is required to monitor and communicate with first responders using 2-way radio systems and provide officers in the field with access to criminal information databases and other resources. The ECS provides service to university police officers as an information resource and is responsible for generating police response records, utilizing a Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD).
As essential employees, ECS staffing of the Communication Center is required 24-hours a day. This staffing requirement necessarily results in shift work and requires coverage for weekends, holidays, and during periods of inclement weather.

Required Education

High School diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE) required.

Required Related Experience

Required to take and pass a psychological examination and drug screen.

Required License/Registration/Certification

Valid Driver's License.

Desirable Related Experience

One year progressively responsible police or emergency service dispatch experience. Computer Aided Dispatch experience. Experience with computer aided police dispatching software preferred. Automated Records Management System (ARMS or ARMS 2020) highly preferred. Experience preferred.

Desirable License/Registration/Certification

NCIC/TIES basic certification preferred.
