Job Summary/Basic Function

The ACEJMC-accredited School of Journalism and Strategic Media at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#143070 ) at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is August 1, 2025.

We seek a dynamic and innovative scholar with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service to teach media design, visual communication, and journalism-related courses. The department's tenure requirements include a record of excellent teaching, peer-reviewed scholarly research and/or creative activity (juried competitions or shows, app development, etc.), and service to the university, the profession, and the public. Required Education

A terminal degree in communication, media, art and design, computer-focused graphic design, or a closely related field is required by the appointment date. ABD will be considered if close to completion. For contract renewal, a terminal degree must be earned no later than August 1, 2026.

A master’s degree in communication, media, art and design, computer-focused graphic design, or a closely related field and four (4) years of full-time media design or visual communication-focused professional work experience will be considered in lieu of a terminal degree. To receive experience credit for full-time, freelance work, applicants must list each project, including the project's length, on their CVs.

Other Desirables

Special consideration will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Industry Experience related to media design.
  • Teaching in media design, visual, graphic, or communication-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to teach motion graphics and after effects.
  • Advising students regarding internships and career paths.
  • Proficiency with the latest Adobe Creative Suite of Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Acrobat and website creation, development and coding using current, industry-standard technology and software.
  • Designing Experience of interactive graphics, maps, infographics, data visualization, and other components used in journalism, advertising, public relations, and sports media.
  • Curriculum Development Experience to match changing media industries and create interactive graphics and mapping courses.
