Job Summary/Basic Function
The Industrial Hygienist will assist the EH&S Industrial Hygiene and Laboratory Safety Manager (IHLSM) to coordinate and implement the Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health programs. The Industrial Hygienist monitors, assesses, and resolves workplace health and safety issues. Duties include evaluating chemical, biological, or physical dangers like air quality, ergonomic challenges, and dangerous sound levels, through the establishment of and adherence to health and safety related regulations and protocols. The focus of this position includes in-house hazards as well as community or environmental hazards. The Industrial Hygienist will operate collaboratively with other members of EHS in major areas of campus as assigned by the EH&S IHLSM. The incumbent will also provide support for occupational health and environmental regulation compliance including all federal, state and local compliance requirements.
Bachelors degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Hazardous Material Management, or a related physical science or engineering degree required. Masters degree is preferred.
Required Related Experience
Five or more years of full-time increasingly responsible professional industrial hygiene experience including compliance inspections or other related work. Additional qualifying graduate coursework in industrial hygiene or other acceptable related field may be substituted for the required experience, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of two years.
Professional Engineering (P.E.) license or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential. PhD in Industrial Hygiene may be substituted in lieu of P.E. or CIH requirement.
Desirable Related Experience
Five years college/university experience in an Industrial Hygienist role.

- EPA Accredited and State of Tennessee Certified Asbestos Supervisor
- EPA Accredited and State of Tennessee Certified Asbestos Project Monitor
- EPA Accredited and State of Tennessee Certified Lead Based Paint (LBP) Inspector
- EPA Accredited and State of Tennessee Certified Lead Based Paint (LBP) Risk Assessor
