Job Summary/Basic Function

Reporting to the Director Research Services, serve as an expert to the university regarding external funding sources and proposal development. Provide direct support to university personnel to find and apply for external grants and contracts for research and sponsored programs. Provide training and guidance to university faculty and staff regarding proposal development. Identify potential funding opportunities with federal, state, and private funders. Disseminate funding opportunity information to the university community. Serve as liaison with funders during proposal development and facilitate collaborations among applicants on and off campus during proposal development. Provide direct support and oversight to applicants during proposal preparation to ensure applications for funding are complete, competitive and in compliance with funder and University requirements. Submit proposals on behalf of the University. Assist Award Management staff during award/contract negotiations as necessary. Requires extensive knowledge of federal and state funding programs and associated web-based systems, research administration, and research compliance. The incumbent will work closely with one other Specialist – Research/Sponsored Programming, the Director of Research Services, and academic administrators to increase the engagement of faculty, students, and staff in externally-funded research and sponsored programs and to increase the number and value of grants and contracts at MTSU. Perform other related tasks and special projects as assigned.

Required Education

Master’s degree required; Master degree in a field of science preferred.

Required Related Experience

One year progressively responsible experience in grant writing, research administration, development office, public relations office or a closely related field.

Desirable Related Experience

Three years progressively responsible experience in grant writing or grant administration preferred.

Desirable License/Registration/Certification

Certified Research Administrator preferred.
